Precip & Pig & Postcards

The rain.  The rain.  The rain.

 Will it ever end?
 Apparently, no.

Despite the rain, Bobaloo and I went to a party last Saturday.
There was a pig roast.  I'm a vegetarian and tried to avoid eye contact.

Aside from the pig there was music, bubbles, tye-dye, and plenty of tom-foolery.  We had a good time.  Pikes Peak is in the picture below but you can't see it because of the weather.

I started Postcrossing again and forgot how much I missed it.  I got my first postcard with the Eiffel Tower on it yesterday.

À la prochaine!

Back in the Hang

Here we are.

What's been going on?

Christmas was good.  Bobaloo and I had five days to hang out and relax.  Here's the official Christmas picture:

I took a short trip to Minnesota to ring in the New Year.  It was the pup's firs road trip and she was a champ.  While up there I visited with girlfriends, had lunch with Bobaloo's parents, and spent a lot of time with my family.  The highlight was New Year's Eve where we got a whole crew of old friends together in a farmhouse to celebrate.  Luckily I left town before the cold snap because on December 31st it was a balmy -10.

Other goings on in no careful order include:

And some more pics:

1. Arts & Crafts 2. Serious Jill in a ridiculous sweater and dinosaur hat 3. DU Hockey game 4. The kiddos 5. All of us kids at the New Year's wang dang doodle

What's new with you?

Show & Tell

I started making my Christmas tree out of sticks and twine.  The finished project (and a better picture) will be soon to come.

December 4

The Kickin' It Old Skool Blog-a-thon's topic of the day is...

Weather!

Five days ago, we had a day like this...

I gave Bobaloo a ride to work, so I woke up at 4 o'clock this morning to this...

Brrr....
I still took my afternoon walk...

and took a proper selfie...

and because he's funny...

All you Need is Lovie

I used to hate football.  I mean, seriously hate it.

When we moved to Boulder, every Sunday morning during football season Bobaloo would go to the local bar to watch the 11:00 Bears game.  I would usually go with and drink vodka-lemonades and do the crossword puzzle just to get out of the apartment.  I had no interest in the game whatsoever.

And then Lovie Smith happened.  I love Lovie.  All you need is Lovie.  And gradually I started paying attention to the game, and then cheering, and then becoming a full-blown fan.

Nobody in Colorado is from Colorado.  We met a lot of Illinoisans that season.  That season was also particularly exciting because they made it to the Superbowl.

One of the folks we met was Grant.  Grant could tell if his entire week was going to be good or bad based on whether or not the Bears won.  Pretty intense, huh?  I don't know where Grant is these days but I worry for his blood pressure every football season.

During one particularly close game there was a bad play or a bad call, some kind of play that didn't bode well for the Bears.  And I will never forget Grant jumping out of his chair and animatedly yelling, "Jesus Christ!"

And then he sat back down, shook his head and muttered, "Sorry Jesus. Wait, no I'm not.  We all know Jesus is a Bears fan."

Friday
Friday was uneventful.  Bobaloo and I met up with a friend for a bit at happy hour.  Another snowstorm came in so we stuck close to home.

Saturday
We probably got about 10 inches of snow so we decided to stay home and kick it at the pad.  Bobaloo made delicious food and I watched movies all day.  Plus, I stayed awake past the SNL monologue which is quite a feat for me!
Mmm... cheese.

 Flicks.

Sunday
Bobaloo and I went on the hunt for some vinyl at a couple of thrift stores, pretty slim pickings.  I think when people start spring cleaning there will be a better selection.  We did pick up an Earth Wind & Fire and a Bill Cosby Album for a total of $1.05.  Later, we headed to a bar that has a wonderful patio with fire pits for a couple of beers.  Next week they are hosting the annual deviled egg competition.

I am ready for the weather to get warmer, the cold and snow is messing with my disposition.

Kiss Me, I'm a Good Skier

If I could have one comedy montage from my brain on videotape, this is would what it would look like:

I am not a coordinated or graceful person.  I have no agility or speed either.  I am clumsy.
I am a great walker though.  I have that down pat.
My job involves snow so when I tell people where I work the first question I get asked is whether I ski or snowboard.
Begin the reel.  Here is the first of many attempts at athleticism...
Growing up, my family took yearly ski trips to Michigan with family friends.  I was a fearful five year old and not excited about strapping two skis on and plummeting down a hill.  Pops however, was full of enthusiasm and exuberance that would soon turn to frustration.  God love him for having faith that someday I would grow out of my awkward stage.   We are still waiting.
With some fuss I got my boots and skis on and practiced on the little hill by the chalet.  I’d walk up the little hill and snowplow my little self down.  Pizza.  French fry.  Pizza.  French Fry.  Sounds fun, right?  I remember a lot of yelling and crying involved during practice.  It was unfair, my brothers took to the hill like Snoopy, suavely traversing the snowy terrain with little effort.  Pops was at a loss on why these skills were harder for me; I chalk it up to being a late bloomer.
After we both had enough zigzagging, Pops brought me to the bottom of the hill to prep me for my first chairlift ride.  The chairlift was an old two-seater that went to the top of the bunny hill.  Pops went through the instructions over and over until I committed them to memory.  Scoot up, grab the pole, sit down, bar down, tips up.  He’d be right next to me the whole time.
And I did it!  We were riding high and I felt a rush of adrenaline and accomplishment.  The views of the trees were spectacular the skiers were whooshing below, this was incredible!
About half way up the ride, Pops started prepping on how the unloading was going to go.  He assured me it was a lot easier than getting on.  I am not sure what exactly happened, but sometime between his instructions and the unloading zone I completely psyched myself out.
My dad left the chairlift and I did not.
I kept going until the lift was stopped.  I took one look at my dad swearing under his breath and started to bawl.  I had been defeated and humiliated by a chairlift.
My saving grace was the liftie, a sweet old man who came out with a ladder and lifted me down gently.  To this day, I remember his kind smile and the safety of his arms.  Once back to the ground he gave me a Kleenex, a Hershey Kiss, and a button that said Kiss me, I’m a good skier.  The world was right again.
Going downhill was a piece of cake.  After the one and only run, Pops brought me back to the chalet and I am guessing went to have a few cocktails to take the edge off of our bonding experience.  It was a long afternoon and at the end of it, all was forgiven.
The next day Pops signed me up for ski school.  Best forty bucks he ever spent.

Friday

Friday was the day that would not end at work.  I was very happy when 4:30 rolled around and I was able to happy hour with Bobaloo and my friend Sam.  Later, we all went back to our place to do some grilling, beer drinking, and music listening.  We moved into a house recently, it's great to have more space to have folks over.  I also started reading Sarah Silverman's The Bedwetter, so far so good.

Saturday

Nik & Bobaloo at the new pad
Oy vey.  This is where the weekend got a little out of hand!  We got our tickets for Widespread Panic at Red Rocks and decided to celebrate with bloody marys (which were delicious, by the way).  The snow blew in and we made a decision to just hang at home.  It turns out some of our friends were bored too so they came over for some good old fashioned day drinking.  Snowladies were made, hotdish was eaten, laughs were had, and goofy songs were written.  I capped the night off by losing my iPhone during a liquor store trip which is why there aren't a whole lot of pics in this post.  Genius.  By the way, if you haven't had tatertot hotdish yet this winter I highly recommend this stick-to-the ribs goodness. Here's one recipe, though you can pretty much use up whatever is in your cupboard.

Sunday

I woke up, had some coffee, and shook the cobwebs so we could head up to Nederland for Frozen Dead Guy Days.  FDGD is an awesome festival that celebrates Grandpa who is frozen in a Tuff Shed.  Bobaloo, a friend, and I made the trek and enjoyed some good music, had some beers, and witnessed the goofiness.  By the time we got home, I was pretty well beat so I capped the weekend off with some frozen pizza and Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

You're still here? It's over. Go home. Go.

Friday

I tried my hand at cooking (with close supervision) fondue.  It turned out great and I have fulfilled my cheese-eating quota for about six months.  Bobaloo put on some John Denver and we kicked 70s at the pad.

Saturday

Bobaloo and I headed up to Boulder to check out the National Center for Atmospheric Research which is a really fancy way to say we played with clouds.  Later we hit up a couple of bars and hung out with friends.

Sunday

We enjoyed the gorgeous day and hiked up North Table Mountain.  Afterwards, we enjoyed beverages on a patio.

Trippin' on Travelin'

I am scared of flying.  Not so much of the heights, I find the airplane so darn claustrophobic.  This is why I prefer window seats.  The trip is more peaceful when looking at the plots of land and how they’re divided.  A few wispy clouds are alright too.  Truth be told, I still take a Clonazepam if it’s a morning flight or a couple of cocktails if the flight is after noon.  Friday’s flight is at 10:15 am.  I might just consider that close enough to noon.

Not being in control scares me the most.  When the plane is preparing to land, I slam my foot down on the imaginary brake in front of me to help out.  You’re welcome other passengers.
I try to not make a big deal about the actual flying part; I don’t really need to add to my neuroses.  I have a routine and that seems to help.  I guess routines would make a lot of things in my life easier, but I just find them so…routine.
I have started to make my bed every day, so I guess there’s that.
Bobaloo won’t just drop me off at the airport, he actually walks in with me and watches me go through the security checkpoint and waves goodbye when I go down the escalator to the tram.  Sometimes before that, we’ll sit at the bar and have a couple of farewell beers.
I touch the outside of the plane before I get in and pray for a safe trip.  I buckle up and get settled in my window seat and usually don’t make small talk with the person next to me.  If it’s a turbulent flight, I try not to make other people nervous.  I do not leave my seat, ever.  I have never been in an airplane bathroom.
I put my headphones on and read a book.  Usually, I can’t focus enough to read for real.  So I pretend to read a book.  Pretending to read is relaxing too.  I downloaded some new tunes for this trip.
It takes me an hour and a half to get where I am going.
My dad picks me up and takes me straight to the bar for a couple of drinks before heading back to the house where my mom is waiting.
This post makes me sound like an alcoholic.  I’m not.  I just really don’t like flying.

2013

I found this cool listy list at Librarian Girl’s blog Pop Culture Librarian, her blog is awesome and funny and you should read it.

Ready to get reflect-y?

1. What did you do in 2012 that you’d never done before?  I went to my first NFL football game.  I took a train trip by myself.  I went to Pikes Peak.

2. Did you keep your new years’ resolutions from last year and will you make more any for 2013?  I don’t think I made any last year, not really my style.  I didn’t make any for this year either.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?  A couple of my girlfriends had babies that are adorable and didn’t object too much to my snuggling.  My sister-in-law also had a baby, who I would like to meet soon.

4. Did anyone close to you die?  Way to be a downer questionnaire.  Yes, both of my grandmas.

5. What trips did you take?  I took a couple of plane trips to Minnesota and Wisconsin.  Bobaloo and I took a short road trip to Wyoming.  I enjoyed being a homebody this year.

6. What would you like to have in 2013 that you lacked in 2012?  I would like more peace of mind or a maybe a car.  Let’s go with the car.

7. What date from 2012 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?  Probably the day the world didn’t end, 12/21/12 just because it was just so damn goofy!

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?  I found a much needed new job.  I love it.

9. What was your biggest failure?  I lost touch with some folks who are important to me.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?  Only of the mental kind.

11. What was the best thing you bought?  I bought an alpaca wool blanket for my mom for Christmas and she loves it!

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?  Pizza, for being consistently gooey and awesome and there for me.  And Bobaloo, for similar reasons.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?  Doesn’t do much good to say mean things here.

14. Where did most of your money go?  Who knows?  I had a lot of fun, so probably towards that.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?  Getting Fish!  Getting a job!  Getting a dog!  Getting to move!

16. What song will always remind you of 2012?  I listened to Vetiver’s “Roll on Babe” quite a bit while walking or getting ready in the morning.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder?  Considerably happier.
ii. thinner or fatter?  Thinner.
iii. richer or poorer?   I’m love-rich.

18. What do you wish you’d done more of?  Traveling.

19. What do you wish you’d done less of?  Worrying.

20. How will you be spending Christmas?  It’s over.  Bobaloo and I spent Christmas Eve at the local watering hole and it included rum and dirty jokes.

21. Did you fall in love in 2012?  Always.

22. How many one-night stands?  This is kind of awkward.

23. What was your favorite TV program?  I finally got into Parks and Recreation (thanks Netflix!) and I really like New Girl.

24. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?  Nope.

25. What was the best book you read?  Ooh.  Only one?  I really liked Moloka’i by Alan Brennert (fiction) and Empire of the Summer Moon by S.C. Gwynne (non-fiction).

26. What was your greatest musical discovery?  I went to my first Wilco show this summer and it was nice.

27. What did you want and get?  A Presto Pizzazz Pizza Oven.

28. What did you want and not get?  Waste not, want not.  Or, want not get not.  I don’t know.

29. What was your favorite film of this year?  I didn’t really see too many movies that came out this year.  I found Goats on Netflix and enjoyed it.

30. What did you do on your birthday and how old were you?  I went to Dave & Busters (best steak in an arcade setting) with some really great friends, drank rum, and won some tickets.  29.

29. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?  Infinite amounts of cash money.  Would I really be happier though?  I’d like to think so.  I don’t really prescribe to the age old idiom, “mo money, mo problems.”

30. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2012?  Thrift store chic?  I kind of stick to the same old stuff, although I bought my first pair of skinny jeans and they totally accentuate my chicken legs.  Bawk!  Bawk!

31. What kept you sane?  Ha!

32. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?  Lovie Smith.

33. What political issue stirred you the most?  Not the time, not the place.

34. Who did you miss?  Near and dear, near and far.

35. Who was the best new person you met?  I have met so many awesome people and strange characters it is impossible to pick.

36. Tell a valuable life lesson you learned in 2012:  Geez.  Where do I start?  Asking for help is not weakness.  People are more often than not compassionate if you give them the chance.  It’s okay to take space and time to sort out emotions and feelings and that kind of crap.

37. A song lyric that sums up your year.

After all that I've been through, you're the only one that matters
Climb to safety
You never left me in the dark here on my own
Climb to safety
I can feel the water rising, let me be your ladder
Climb to safety
I promise you'll be dry and never be alone

Here's to another year!

We had our first big snow yesterday and it was pretty chilly too.

“Conversation about the weather is the last refuge of the unimaginative.” -Oscar Wilde
Cut me a break here, I’m trying to get back into the groove.
December is my least favorite month, always has been.  I spend an awful lot of November worrying about December.  Self-fulfilling prophecy or time proven truth?

This December has been nice and there has been a bit of peace to it.  I am happy about my four day Christmas break.
Coffee sampler pack, a book from my mom, dogs, a pizza oven, Tuba Christmas, movies, Christmas Eve at the bar, and perhaps some snowshoeing.  And hands down the best part, four days with Bobaloo.  Color me lucky, for real.

I was thinking about one of our first winters together when we were dating.  We went to a lot of coffee shops back then.  One of our favorites, Bob's Java Hut, is still there.  The Mexican Mocha is where it’s at.
More often though, we’d haunt Pandora’s Cup.  It’s not there anymore.  We would order mochas with homemade whipped cream from tattooed baristas, head up to the smoky upstairs by way of the creaky wooden stairs.  We played Word Dojo for hours, pumping dollar after dollar into the Megatouch.   I would read our destiny from the City Pages and smoke Camel Lights.
Bobaloo isn't much of a coffee drinker and isn't so much into video games.  Every weekend for a couple of years, he would sit and drink coffee and play nerdy word games with me.
After, he would put my mittened hand in his and off we’d go with the snow crunching under our feet until the next weekend.
It was that kind of cold last night.

Just a memory I don’t want to forget, that’s all.

Weekends

I started my new job and so far it’s going great. The best part of it is getting done at 3:30 during the week and having weekends off. I had almost forgotten what that was like to have precious weekends and I have been filling them up with all sorts of fantastic things from alpacas to a frozen dead guy.

The first weekend off included a trip up to Boulder. Bobaloo and I toured the Celestial Seasonings factory and learned about tea. They had a peppermint tea room that was incredible. With one draw of breath my sinuses cleared and my eyes became teary. The day was followed by some poking around in Tables and Teacups one of my favorite antique stores. We didn’t find any treasures but we sure built up an appetite. After antiquing, we headed to the Pearl Street Mall for some grub and ended up at this wonderful Mediterranean restaurant where we feasted on tapas, cheese ravioli, and lamb shank for Bobaloo. The day ended with the beautiful ride back to Golden.

The Olympics, grocery shopping, movies, and staying warm in the apartment took up a couple of weekends. But it was great to hang around the apartment and not have to worry about getting out of bed early or showering. I have a general rule of only needing to shower once and throwing a hat on the rest of the weekend. Lazy days can go by so quickly, I blink and am back to work on Monday.

One weekend, Bobaloo worked on Sunday so we packed in all of our fun on Saturday. We started at an alpaca extravaganza at the Boulder fairgrounds. Can you believe it? It was an entire extravaganza just for alpacas. We made our way in from the muddy parking lot and checked out the unassuming and dreamy animals. Now, I would like an alpaca farm. After we had enough of the alpacas we headed to a restaurant called The Gondolier. Garlic knots, mushrooms, a caprese sandwich, pasta, and dessert filled us up and we were ready to return home. We topped off the evening on the couch with a movie.

Last weekend took the cake! We went to our first Frozen Dead Guy Days up in Nederland, CO. It is a whole festival dedicated to a dead guy that is frozen in a Tuff Shed until he can come back to life. Crazy Norwegians! We checked out the hearse parade and the polar plunge. Brrr.. There was food and drink galore and a lot of people. The sun was shining and people were having fun which made me eager for summer.

How much fun can I pack in to two days? Apparently quite a bit. I am looking forward to this weekend to see what’s in store.

Golden in the Winter

This is the town I live in.
The creek where Bobaloo and I have coffee.
The mountain.
The Coors Brewery. Nothing like the smell of hops early in the morning.
There's even chickens.
All sorts of statues.
This statue outside of the bar, drunk people like to ride the buffalo.
The watering hole.
I hope you enjoyed the tour, please visit again.

A Homemade Christmas

All of our Christmas decorations are in a storage unit in California this year. After work one day, Bobaloo found some fun shiny stuff that the AT&T store threw away. Knowing my propensity for shiny stuff, he put it in the Groovaru and brought it on home.
This is the stuff Christmas trees are made of..

Da Plague! Da Plague!

My dad compares giving two weeks notice to having the plague. I agree. The first few days have been somewhat awkward. I planned a “Pie Day” for Friday, hopefully that will ease the rigidity. It is probably one of those scenarios where people hate change in the landscape of every day life. I cannot say I contribute too much to the office except for a little humor and well, pie.

Oh well.

I am very excited about the move now because everything is lining up as well as possible. My mom is going to fly to Denver and road trip with me to San Diego. Woo-hoo! She is referring to the road trip as, “Jill and Mom’s excellent adventure.” Wow. I will be sure to bring the camera for this.

Yay.

I am proud to announce that this morning is the last time I will ever scrape my windshield. I really hate getting up earlier to do that. People should not have to preheat their cars; it should be a rule or something. Navigating the frozen roads with ice-covered idiots driving frantically is the worst.

Home Fires

Like everyone else, my husband and I are feeling the effects of the economy. We have been trying to save money this winter and the easiest way to do this has been to stop going out. That is easier said than done since we are happy hour regulars. Give us an excuse to go out. Anything. It could be poker night though we do not play cards, karaoke night though we do not sing, or just friends getting together.

About a year ago, we met our friend Sam at a local watering hole. He is a hell of a good friend who moved to Colorado many years ago from South Louisiana. While he is a Coloradan now, he still has a hint of his drawl and plenty of southern charm. He too, was looking for ways to save money.

This is how the every-other-weekend bonfire got started. Sam has a beautiful home and a large backyard. His roommate J. bought him a portable fire pit, which is placed on his patio surrounded by metal chairs. Bonfire parties are a lot cheaper than the bar. All you need is firewood, beer, and tunes.

There are some evenings when it is just Bobaloo, Sam, and I at the fire and nights when there are a dozen people. Anyone is welcome to stop by and stay as long as they would like. Some nights we shut it down at midnight and there are bonfires that see the morning light.

Something happens to people when they sit around the fire. There is comedy, philosophy, and some good old-fashioned bull shitting that occurs. Everyone brings their brand of something to the fire.

Bobaloo is the fire-poker who loves to throw logs on and switch between the teepee and Lincoln log fires. Sam loves to put the music on and does well at matching the evening’s mood. I make snowmen and put them in any empty chairs. They usually turn out scary looking, but that is my contribution. J. brings jokes and James Brown to the bonfire.

Some evenings there are musicians, people from faraway lands, or old friends. At ten degrees, there we are, all bundled up and huddled around the warm fire. It must be a sight to see.

Snow Day

All of the snow reminds me of where I am from. I try to be stoic, but the truth is sometimes I miss where I grew up. I am not even sure if I should call it home. After all, home is where the heart is and my heart is here. A little piece of it might be there. I think it would feel like betrayal to call it home after three years. Therefore, I will go with calling it the place where I come from.

The place where I come from is cold eight months out of the year. I remember snow like today. I used to get up early and leave my house at 5:30 in the morning to get to work. One day, the morning was dark and luminous at the same time because of the perfect downy snowflakes. I was inside of a snow globe. That is the perfect snow.

I saw the northern lights where I come from when I was 10 years old. I was in my gray snowsuit laying in the snowy front yard with the older kids. It was midnight; I was eating snow and watching a glowing performance of lights that I thought was just for me. Back then, I did not realize that would be the only time in my childhood I would see such a thing. I can recall the taste of the sopping snow and feeling minute.

There were neighbor girls where I come from. We sledded and ice-skated every day after school. We built snowmen, forts, and had snowball fights. When we were finished playing we would put our dripping knit mittens on the radiator vents to dry and make hot cocoa with milk.

I remember 1991 where I come from. My brother was born a month before the blizzard. I was a princess on Halloween and it snowed. Is snowed and snowed and snowed. Dad let us jump off the roof that year into the humongous snow banks.

Christmas where I come from involve ice fishing. My uncle's coveralls always smelled like outside when I hugged him and my aunt's flannel shirt scratched against my cheek when it was time to say goodbye. My first fish was a Northern.

I miss it all today, including the snow. I miss where I come from.

A Boost Of Positivity

Although I have been out of blog-worthy material as of late, I have all sorts of plans for the weekend up my sleeve. Tonight on the menu is Kickin' Joe's formerly Jammin' Joe's to meet up with old and new friends. I have old friends in Colorado, can you believe it? It's amazing how many awesome people I have met here in the last three years. I am going there to see my friend Dave, who is kind of an outlaw hippie dude. He is awesome and it has been too dang long since I have seen him. With me, hopefully I'll be bringing my other Steve Goodman loving friend, Sam.

Tomorrow is Rachael's birthday fun on Market Street where we are going pup crawling. I think I will do my first Adventure of Yet-To-Be-Named Creamer Cow then.

Happy happy hour my kickin' chickens! Please vote for my creamer cow's name on the right. Here is a picture for inspiration:
