Granny Jill

Yesterday I got really, really excited about my newest purchase.

Today I had to get some work done.

After work I am going here:

instead of here:

Who am I?
What is happening to me?

*Don't worry.  I fully intend to get into childish shenanigans this weekend.

December 6

Looking back....

Today's prompt for the blog-a-thon is to share your first blog post.  So here it is...

Let's get ready to rum ball!

Get it? Rum ball = Rumble. Well, this seems as good of a way to start a blog as any. Merry Christmas.

On December 24, 2008 I was 25, newly married, and working as a receptionist.  I started out reading a couple of great blogs and was inspired to create my own.

This blog was started to be a place to be weird and goofy but my brand of weird and goofy is best experienced in person so instead I started writing about the goings on in my life.

It took a long time to find my "voice" here and I cringe reading some of my old posts.  Cringe.  But just like my brace-faced/home-permed/neon outfit middle school pictures, they still exist.  I refuse to delete, keeping them as evidence of growth.  Or something.

This blog and I have been through a lot together.

And to those who read, you have given me so very much.

I'll stop being such a sap now.  Anyhow, thanks for reading.

October 4

October 4 is a big day.  8 years ago today Bobaloo and I woke up early in the morning and left Minnesota.  He drove the U-Haul and I followed behind in my car.  You can make it to Colorado in about 14 hours.  We decided to drive until we were tired and if we needed to take 2 days to make the trip so be it.

We reached a city in Nebraska called Ogallala and stopped to fill up the tanks.  At the gas station Bobaloo asked me if I wanted to stop for the night or keep going.  I told him I wanted to keep going.  And we did.

And that was as good as an I do.  We were in this together.  And we still are.

5 years ago today we woke up early in the morning, put on our Sunday best, and got hitched on a beautiful fall day in a canyon by a creek.

Did you know I met him at a Halloween party?  I did.

I even have a picture of that lucky night.

Get ready for the awesomeness...

Wow.

He told me his favorite Neil Young song was Sugar Mountain and we found out that we both didn't like Dave Matthews Band and he obviously made me laugh (see above).  I think that was all I needed to know about him.

September 13

Bobaloo and I are doing just fine and keeping dry.  We have been getting so, so much rain which is very strange for September.  The flooding is around us but we are in a pocket of the metro that doesn't have any creeks or rivers and the roads are fine.  The rain isn't supposed to let up until Monday so I hope everyone can hunker down and stay safe.

On Labor Day we went to the duck races at one of the bars we like to hang out at.  Here is the creek then...

My friend (Hi Eric!) took this photo yesterday...

Yikes!

------
Today's topic is A self portrait.  I found this 1989 gem in a scrapbook.  I would probably draw myself the same way today, without such a liberal use of tongue.  And I might add some hands and feet.

.

I also found a lovely Mother's Day card I made.

PS - I was crying on camera because she wouldn't let me watch The Cosby Show
What a kid.
Happy Friday the 13th and Happy Weekend!

September 06

A story about a time you were very afraid.

I am a scaredy-cat; definitely not someone you would want to be in a haunted house with.  Since I am working hard on not dwelling on my anxious thoughts, I think I'll take a different spin on today's topic and tell you what I am not afraid of.

Although I am a bit scared of a lot of things, I am not superstitious.  In one week it's Friday the Thirteenth.  I love Friday the Thirteenth!

There is a neat article on Mental Floss about the Thirteen Club.  The gist is that in 1882 thirteen guys got together to prove thirteen wasn't unlucky.  Dinners were held where the gents did things like walk under ladders, open umbrellas indoors, break glass, etc.  All the unlucky stuff.

I want to throw a Thirteen Club party one of these days but worry people wouldn't show.  A lot of folks still hang onto these superstitions, don't they?

Are you superstitious?  Would you brave a Thirteen Club dinner or is that just tempting fate?

Bring on the black cats and have a great weekend!

Who Knew?

So, Bobaloo has told me about this thing he did when he was a kid and apparently it's a normal adolescent thing.

Do you remember being at a school assembly or a program put on by a different grade and wanting to be the last person who clapped?

I have never heard of this.

Oh my gosh, I just googled.  It's a thing.

According to Urban Dictionary:
Last-clap contest

When you're at a performance or assembly and the applaud is just ending, this is the contest when two people both try to get the last clap. Usually lasts about 20 seconds before both people give up.

Cathy: I loved how during the assembly today, there was a last-clap contest between Jeff and Matt.

There's even a Facebook page!

Who knew?  Have you ever heard of this?!

Friday!

My favorite day has arrived once more.

Blogging sort of got away from me this week.  Hmmm....

Bobaloo's sunflowers have started to sprout in the yard.  Last weekend I noticed some orange stuff on the side of the house which turned out to be giant poppies.  There are all sorts of plants popping up these days.

Mona the turtle is doing well.  I am planning on building her an outdoor habitat soon which seems ambitious and may involve power tools.  She sure likes her fruits and veggies.  Her favorite is cucumber.

A while back my brother texted me this picture with the caption "I caught a Jill!"  It's a Largemouth Bass.  Hilarious.

I sent him this in reply:

Take that, bro!

On Sunday I am going to take a class on Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT).  I have been trying to be open to more holistic healing methods because prescription medication has been pretty nasty to me in the past.  I like learning about alternative ways of dealing with crap when I am doing well, so I have more "tools" at my side when things aren't too hot.  Anyway, I am looking forward to the class.

In fact, I am looking forward to an exciting and action-packed weekend.

Happy Friday!
